The clients are an empty-nest couple, with a primary residence in the suburbs that is rich in classical details. This pied-à-terre is meant to function as an aesthetic and geographic escape from their daily life. They were conflicted about how to achieve a balance between wanting a forward-thinking interior with the classical detailing with which they were familiar. The final design is a creative compromise. The design utilizes every crown molding, base molding and chair rail, but deploys them in one hyper-articulated moment rather than distribute them throughout the space. In its thickness, the wall anchors the space and defines a barrier between the residential public space and the kitchen and storage area at the rear of the apartment. The Molding Wall’s aesthetic goes beyond Postmodern iconography and turns classical details into an organic condition from which they were orginally derived. In its repetition, the Molding Wall blends the individual extrusions into one singular iconographic form that defines the apartment’s identity.
